Transcending postcolonial Conditions: Towards Alternative Maternities


This conference marks the joint venture of The Pan African Anthropological Association and an Inter-congress of The International Union of Anthropological, and Ethnological Sciences, University of Cape Town


The Department of Social Anthropology at the University of Cape Town hosted the 2006 annual conference in December 2006 entitled Transcending postcolonial Conditions: Towards Alternative Maternities. They accommodated anthropologists from virtually every corner of the world including representatives from North and South America, from Western and Eastern Europe, from the Middle East and the Far East and New Zealand and from many African countries.


The two key note addresses were Law & Disorder in the postcolony (Jean and John Comaroff) and Negotiating Post-colonial conditions as Gendered Praxis(Faye Harrison).
