Dr Shaheed is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Sociology and Social Anthropology at Stellenbosch University, South Africa. His work on the Anthropology of Islam focusses on food practices, human-animal relations, trade, slaughter, and sacrifice through which to understand the complex entanglements of religion, politics and economy in India and South Africa.
Recent publications include work on the transformation of halal in South Africa, the politics of disgust, slaughter, order and infrastructural neglect in Mumbai, and the values materialised through Muslim restaurant practices in the city (2022).
