ASnA Council's Statement on Anti-Immigration in South Africa

Jun 30, 2026

The Council of Anthropology Southern Africa (CASA) has issued a statement in response to the rise of anti-immigration movements in South Africa.

At its meeting held on 12 June 2026, the Council resolved to share its collective position, calling on anthropologists, educators, researchers, and students to critically reflect on the role of anthropology in understanding and addressing the social conditions that shape people's lives. The statement also highlights the importance of challenging the dehumanisation of migrants and fostering more inclusive and humane approaches to teaching, learning, and research.

Staff and students are encouraged to read the attached statement and share it widely with colleagues, peers, students, and broader networks to promote informed dialogue and meaningful engagement on these critical issues. Nokubonga Nokwanda Mazibuko
